Taylor Swift's late entry to the world of politics stepped up Monday as she donated over $100,000 to a group fighting against bills which target the LGBTQ community. The singer donated $113,000 to the Tennessee Equality Project—an advocacy group in the state where she made her first steps towards worldwide fame—which is lobbying against bills which would permit adoption agencies to discriminate against same-sex couples based on their religious beliefs, and another which would make it state policy to defend marriage as being between one man and one woman. Swift's donation came with a handwritten letter to Chris Sanders, the group’s leader. “I’m so inspired by the work you do, specifically in organizing the recent petition of Tennessee faith leaders standing up against the ‘slate of hate’ in our state legislature,” she wrote. “I’m so grateful that they’re giving all people a place to worship.” Swift made her first major political statement last October she posted on Instagram about her support for the Democratic candidate in the Tennessee midterms.
